Things to Do in Delaware City
Choose your own combination of island history, mainland trails, Clinton Street shops and river views. Delaware City rewards a visit with more than one stop.
History and heritage
The town’s 1826 plan and its later 1851 incorporation are separate milestones. The original C&D Canal connected Delaware City to a wider world of shipping and trade; the preserved lock and streets still give that story a physical setting. Begin with City History, then use the historic downtown walk to look at the town from the public street.
Fort Delaware
Pea Patch Island holds the coastal-defense fort and its Civil War prison history. Reaching it is part of the experience: a seasonal ferry connects the Delaware City waterfront to the island. Do not plan an island visit without checking operating dates and booking details.
Fort Delaware visitor information →Fort DuPont
The mainland post tells a different chapter of river defense through outdoor gun batteries, historic buildings and marked trails. Stay on public routes and respect closures; a historic structure is not automatically open to enter.
Explore Fort DuPont →Battery Park and the waterfront
At the foot of Clinton Street, make a pause for Delaware River views and the Battery Park interpretive panels. The waterfront connects the town's shops, ferry story and canal heritage. For boating, docking and fishing rules, use the separate Life on the Water resource.

The Michael N. Castle Trail follows the C&D Canal. Choose an out-and-back that suits your group instead of committing to the whole trail. Bring water, allow for your return and check signs and current official trail information.

Eat, drink and shop local
Clinton Street makes it easy to combine a meal with browsing. Artworth Creations brings original art and prints to the street; check directly for current paint-party offerings. Past to Present Resale offers another kind of discovery, while The Cake Sisters Bakery adds a sweet stop. These are starting points, not the only businesses to explore.
Events and seasonal activities
An event can give your day a focus, but annual traditions are not a substitute for confirmed dates. Check the events listings and each organizer’s source. Fort ferry operations and individual business hours change with the season; confirm them before traveling.
Find a day that fits you
History visitors
Pair the downtown walk with an island fort visit when the ferry operates, or choose mainland Fort DuPont and the historic structures resource.
Families
Keep the outing flexible: a waterfront pause, one history stop and a food stop can be enough. Check each attraction for arrangements that suit your group.
Couples
Browse art and resale shops, choose a meal together and finish with river views. Let opening hours shape the order of the day.
Cyclists
Make a canal ride the main activity and return downtown for food. Pick your turn-around point before leaving and avoid treating a long trail as a short town stroll.
Boaters and waterfront visitors
Arrange marina docking directly if arriving by boat. If arriving on land, enjoy public waterfront routes without entering working docks.
Shoppers and event visitors
Use Clinton Street as your starting point and leave room for a second stop. Booked event or ferry times come first; browsing can fit around them.
