Historic roots. Vibrant future.
Main Street Delaware City Inc. is a nonprofit community organization dedicated to preserving, promoting, and strengthening Delaware City.
Since our incorporation in 1995, Main Street has worked to protect the historic and cultural character of Delaware City while supporting the residents, businesses, property owners, organizations, and visitors who help keep our riverfront community vibrant.
Our focus extends throughout Delaware City. We believe historic preservation, successful local businesses, thoughtful investment, community involvement, and destination marketing all work together to create a stronger town.
Our history
Main Street Delaware City Inc. was formally incorporated as a Delaware nonprofit organization on September 26, 1995.
The organization was established to protect and enhance the historical and cultural significance of Delaware City while considering the interests of local residents, businesses, visitors, and the general public.
From the beginning, Main Street’s purpose has included:
Promoting historic preservation
Sharing Delaware City’s history and culture
Supporting thoughtful building rehabilitation and design
Encouraging economic development
Working with community organizations and public partners
Supporting the restoration of historic properties
Promoting the distinctive qualities of Delaware City to businesses, investors, residents, and visitors
Today, that original purpose continues to guide our work as we adapt to new opportunities and challenges.
Part of a remarkable historic community
Delaware City’s story reaches back to 1801, when the Newbold family acquired the land that became known as Newbold’s Landing.
Plans for the town were drawn in 1826, with an ambitious vision for a commercial center along the Delaware River. When the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal opened in 1829, Delaware City’s location at the canal’s eastern terminus helped establish the community as an important center for shipping, trade, transportation, fishing, and agriculture.
The town later became known for its peach industry, commercial fisheries, maritime activity, and distinctive architecture. Its surviving buildings tell the story of changing periods of prosperity, industry, and community life.
Today, the Delaware City Historic District contains more than 250 contributing structures. Homes, storefronts, commercial buildings, streets, and public spaces reflect architectural styles spanning from the town’s earliest years through the twentieth century.
That history is not simply something behind us. It remains visible along Clinton Street, throughout Delaware City’s neighborhoods, beside the waterfront, and in the businesses and buildings that continue to serve the community.

Main Street Delaware City is dedicated to preserving and strengthening Delaware City’s historic downtown through historic preservation, small-business support, destination marketing, and community partnerships that encourage investment and celebrate the city’s unique waterfront heritage.
